Standards

The BBSA fully supports the adoption of standards and co-funds a UK expert on the appropriate BSI and CEN committees.

You can see the key standards relevant to the solar shading industry here.

Thermal and optical performance

The thermal (heat) and optical (light) performance of blinds and shutters should be calculated to BS EN 14501 and BS EN 410 to ensure key performance characteristics are derived from agreed test methods and against agreed reference glazings.

The European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO) has created a European Solar Shading Database (ES-SDA)

This database only contains performance data that has been calculated to the European norms detailed above by accredited laboratories, and the data is then peer-reviewed by industry experts before being added to the database.

This database is free to access for all and the BBSA encourages the use of this data in building modelling and simulations.

Child safety

Enhanced child safety requirements incorporated in the 2014 revision of BS EN 13120 (Internal blinds performance requirements including safety) have been instrumental in changing the way internal blinds are designed, manufactured, sold and installed. For more information on child safety with blinds, see the BBSA’s Make It Safe Website www.makeitsafe.org.uk
